Job Description:
Our Opportunity
Chewy is seeking a Software Development Manager – SCADA to join our Fulfillment Process Automation organization. In this role, you will lead the design, development, and support of Ignition-based SCADA solutions that improve visibility, reliability, and performance across Chewy’s fulfillment network. You will work on systems that directly impact operational uptime, safety, and throughput by connecting industrial controls, edge devices, and operational data into scalable SCADA platforms, including cloud-enabled infrastructure in AWS.
As the leader of a small SCADA engineering team, you will provide both technical direction and people leadership, including direct management of two software engineers. You will serve as a subject matter expert for SCADA platforms while partnering closely with operations, maintenance, controls, and engineering stakeholders to deliver reliable, secure, and maintainable solutions that improve fulfillment performance.
This role is ideal for a technical leader who can solve complex problems with simple, effective solutions. The right candidate thinks creatively, approaches challenges from multiple angles, and builds with scalability, maintainability, and operational reliability in mind. The ideal candidate is comfortable working across industrial controls, software development, Ignition application development, and system integration, translating data from PLCs and edge systems into clear, actionable operational visibility across on-premises and AWS-hosted environments.
What You’ll Do
- Lead and manage a SCADA software engineering team, including coaching, development, and performance management for two engineers
- Design, develop, and support Ignition-based SCADA systems used in fulfillment center operations
- Build and maintain SCADA applications that provide real-time performance visibility, alarming, dashboards, and OEE metrics
- Own key SCADA applications, integrations, and system components, ensuring they are reliable, maintainable, and scalable
- Drive technical execution, delivery, prioritization, and support for SCADA initiatives across the fulfillment network
- Provide hands-on technical leadership through design reviews, architecture guidance, problem solving, and engineering best practices
- Partner with operations, maintenance, controls, and engineering teams to understand business needs and translate them into practical technical solutions
- Design and support integrations from PLCs and edge devices into SCADA and downstream enterprise systems
- Work with industrial communication protocols such as OPC UA, MQTT, and BACnet
- Guide development of Ignition Perspective applications, including HMI screens, reusable components, and operational dashboards
- Support reporting and visualization needs for operational and engineering stakeholders
- Contribute to standardized SCADA design patterns, development practices, and reusable solutions across multiple facilities
- Support on-premises and cloud-hosted SCADA environments, including AWS-based infrastructure components that enable SCADA workloads
- Help improve SCADA security, access control, operational reliability, and data governance practices
- Lead troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and production support efforts for SCADA systems
- Participate in field commissioning, system startup, and operational issue resolution as needed
- Balance delivery of new features and enhancements with long-term system stability and supportability
- Contribute to documentation, runbooks, and knowledge sharing across the team
- Communicate project status, technical risks, trade-offs, and priorities to stakeholders and leadership
What You’ll Need
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 5+ years of experience in software engineering, industrial automation, SCADA, or a related technical field
- 2+ years of experience leading projects, mentoring engineers, or managing technical teams
- Hands-on experience designing, developing, and supporting SCADA applications, preferably using Ignition
- Strong understanding of industrial automation systems, including experience integrating with PLCs, edge devices, and plant-floor systems
- Experience with industrial communication protocols such as OPC UA, MQTT, BACnet, or similar
- Experience building visualization layers such as HMI screens, dashboards, and alarming systems
- Experience supporting production systems with a focus on reliability, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis
- Working knowledge of cloud and infrastructure concepts, preferably in AWS
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including application design, testing, version control, and maintainable coding practices
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical work, influence design decisions, and guide engineers through delivery and support
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical and operational teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in fulfillment, logistics, manufacturing, or other highly automated operational environments
- Experience in leading or directly managing software engineers
- Experience implementing or supporting OEE metrics, event models, or operational performance reporting
- Experience with enterprise system integrations and data modeling
- Familiarity with SCADA cybersecurity principles and best practices
- Experience supporting distributed systems deployed across multiple sites
- Experience balancing people leadership with hands-on technical contribution in a fast-paced environment
- Experience working in highly automated fulfillment or distribution environments
- Experience building standardized solutions that can scale across multiple facilities
- Experience collaborating closely with operations, maintenance, and controls stakeholders
