Description:
Looking for a rewarding career where you can make a real impact on your community? Join our Public Works team as a Construction Maintenance Technician! In this key role, you'll perform skilled trades and technical work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of vital public infrastructure. This is a great opportunity to work with a dynamic team, operate specialized equipment, and help keep our city’s roads, utilities, and facilities running smoothly.

Example of Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment such as jet-vacs, street sweepers, and high-pressure systems for sewer and line cleaning.
  • Inspect, repair, and replace sewer and water lines, water main breaks, and related infrastructure.
  • Respond to customer inquiries and resolve complaints; escalate complex issues to supervisor.
  • Build and maintain street and regulatory signs; repair barricades and road striping; install and synchronize streetlights.
  • Prepare technical reports, work orders, and monitor traffic flow using specialized software.
  • Assist with training and provide support as Crew Chief when needed.
  • Perform a variety of related tasks to ensure the safety and functionality of city infrastructure.

Typical Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED preferred and minimal experience in the operation of motorized equipment. Those applying without a high school diploma or GED must have 10th grade reading level and ability to write complete sentences.
  • Experience in water/sewer maintenance, repair, or construction; asphalt repairs, and storm drain work.
  • Possession of or ability to acquire a Class A commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina within six months of employment.
  • Ability to operate a variety of construction equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to perform manual labor under challenging weather conditions.
  • Ability to learn the geography of the city and interpret plans and blueprints.
  • Ability to work effectively with team members and the public.
Preferred:
  • Certifications such as Flagger, Pesticide Applicator, Class B Water Distribution, or Wastewater Collection II within one year of hire, as applicable.

Other Necessary Requirements

Physical Requirements:

  • This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 70 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
  • Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm’s length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work.
  • The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus
