GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs skilled and semi-skilled work in parks maintenance in the Parks and Recreation Department.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs skilled work involving maintenance of parks, facilities, equipment and works extensively with irrigation systems and associated components, does related work as required.

- Opens and closes parks and ensures parks are operated within established operational regulations.
- Enforces rules and regulations at parks and facilities.
- Works with and supervises part-time staff and community service workers.
- Supervises and participates in maintenance of athletic fields, parks, greenways, and public open spaces.
- Maintains and repairs park facilities, mowers, vehicles, tools, and other equipment.
- Assists with coordination of maintenance activities with other departments and outside agencies.
- Assists with concerts and special events.
- Assists Park Managers, Grounds Manager and Director with determining maintenance priorities and assigns work.
- Performs advanced troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of irrigation systems.
- Performs routine seasonal irrigation start up, inspections and winterization procedures.
- Maintains grounds, prunes, trims, and fertilizes hedges, trees, and bushes; mows grass; applies herbicides and pesticides as necessary.
- Assists with implementation of maintenance plan for park facilities.
- Performs beautification work, including, but not limited to planting flowers, spreading pine needles and mulch.
- Interacts with public and provides customer service both in person and by phone.
- Maintains daily work records.
- Performs routine cleaning and custodial duties within Parks.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Typical Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of the operation of maintenance equipment is necessary. Advanced knowledge of repair and maintenance of irrigation systems (including two-wire irrigation systems) and grounds maintenance and the associated work is necessary. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Must possess the ability to read landscape and irrigation plans/designs along with as-builts.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: High school graduate or GED; must be at least 18 years of age.
Minimum Requirements
Minimum of three (3) years supervisory experience is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and training. Must pass a criminal background check.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification as an Irrigation Technician is preferred or the ability to obtain and maintain Irrigation Technician certification with twelve months of employment.
- Valid NC driver’s license with CDL endorsement or ability to obtain is required. A safe driving history is also required.
- A pesticides applicator license with public operator, category L is also required, or applicant must be willing to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Also preferred, but not required is playground safety inspector certification.
Additional Information:
NC CDL must be maintained the entire duration of employment.
Category L Pesticides applicator license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
This position requires a Commercial Driver License and is regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT). This position is subject to random substance abuse testing at anytime for the duration of employment and while occupying a DOT regulated position. Other Necessary Requirements
