Telecommunicator ($45,742 - $52,604 annually)
No prior experience required

  • Must be able to obtain a Certification from the North Carolina Sheriff’s Education and Training Standards Commission as a Criminal Justice Officer / Telecommunicator or if hired prior to January 1, 2021, obtained the training, experience and education that is comparable to the requirements of the Intermediate Certificate
  • Receives incoming calls on multi-band, multi-channel telecommunications equipment.
  • classifies as to nature and type of emergency or call.
  • Obtains precise and detailed information usually from distressed individuals to ensure an appropriate course of action.
  • Dispatches appropriate publics safety personnel and equipment
  • Responds to requests from the general public for information concerning full range of available public services or routes calls to appropriate department, division or person.
  • Records demographic and other identifying data for each call received according to the and nature of emergency or non-emergency.
  • Operates computer terminals for DCI (Division of Criminal Information) and departmental computer system.
  • Enters and extracts data needed for investigative purposes by police or others authorized to receive such data.
  • Receives and dispatches E911 calls, operates E911 equipment, including systems for telecommunication with the deaf
  • Operates computer terminal for Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD)
  • Decides if incoming calls should be referred to other local jurisdictions or if other state or local law enforcement, medical or fire personnel should be requested.
  • Receives and dispatches police and fire calls for the City of Kannapolis
  • Monitors CCTV
  • Performs related duties and assignments as directed by the department.
Telecommunicator II ($48,032 - $55,237 annually)
  • Must meet the requirements of Telecommunicator (above)
  • Obtained an Intermediate Certification from the North Carolina Sheriff’s Education and Training Standards Commission as a Criminal Justice Officer / Telecommunicator or if hired prior to January 1, 2021, obtained the training, experience and education that is comparable to the requirements of the Intermediate Certificate
  • Has four years of service as a Telecommunicator
  • Maintains all required certifications from the North Carolina Sheriff’s Education Training and Standards Commission as a Criminal Justice Officer / Telecommunicator
  • Successfully completed at least 40 hours of approved training or education in courses related to the duties of a telecommunicator that are designed to enhance their skills and/or knowledge. Initial telecommunicators certification course annual in-service and Commission mandated courses do not count toward this requirement
  • Is an active and progressive Communications Training Officer (CTO) or has completed 50% of a Leadership Development Program approved by the Chief of Police
  • Must successfully complete, or have completed, training and/or certification in advanced supervision or leadership as approved by the Chief of Police.
Master Telecommunicator ($50,430 - $57,994 annually)
  • Obtained an Advanced Certification from the North Carolina Sheriff’s Education and Training Standards Commission as a Criminal Justice Officer / Telecommunicator or if hired prior to January 1, 2021, obtained the training, experience and education that is comparable to the requirements of the Advanced Certificate
  • Has completed six years of service as a Telecommunicator
  • Maintains all required certifications from the North Carolina Sheriff’s Education Training and Standards Commission as a Criminal Justice Officer / Telecommunicator
  • Is an active and progressive Communications Training Officer (CTO) or has completed of a Leadership Development Program approved by the Chief of Police
  • Must have attained an overall standard or above standard rating on their three prior performance evaluations
  • No formal disciplinary actions within the past twelve months
  • Recommendation of supervisors at the Unit and Division level
  • Must be able to complete basic supervisory tasks such as troubleshooting technical issues within the Communications Center.
  • Must successfully complete, or have completed, training and/or certification in advanced supervision or leadership as approved by the Chief of Police.

Typical Qualifications


REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school and some experience in radio dispatching or public safety telecommunications work requiring computer skills and voice communication is preferred or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be 20 years or older at the time of employment.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain by the time of hire, a valid North Carolina driver's license.
  • Must be a US Citizen and able to read, write, and speak the English language.
  • Must be able to acquire and maintain a valid certification from the NC Division of Criminal Information as a DCI Terminal Operator in all required modules.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
A NC Class C Drivers License must be obtained and maintained for the entire duration of employment.

This position is classified as safety sensitive and is subject to random substance abuse testing at any time for the duration of employment and while occupying a safety sensitive position.

This position primarily operates in an office setting, performing mostly sedentary work. Sufficient visual acuity is required to prepare and analyze data and figures and do extensive reading. May require the physical exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects. An employee in this position will not be substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
