HIRING RANGE: $22.65 - $26.04 hourly; $47,115 - $54,182 annually
Hours of work: 7PM - 7AM (rotating weekly shift)

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

  • Performs intermediate technical work in the operation of water pumping and purification equipment
  • Does related work as required
  • Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Water Treatment Plant Supervisor

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS: The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.   • Monitoring and adjusting plant operations
  • Troubleshooting and maintaining plant equipment
  • Recording and maintaining plant operation records
  • Oversees proper functioning of water pumps, motors, chlorinators, filters, and chemical feeders
  • Adjusts as necessary to maintain proper flow of water
  • Keeps records and monitors reservoir levels, head loss levels, pump station status, etc.
  • Checks incoming rate and pumping levels to schedule flow changes
  • Adds or adjusts addition of chemicals to water as necessary
  • Notes readings of meters and indicators
  • Changes charts on recording meters and gauges
  • Collects water samples from designed points, performs basic chemicals tests
  • Makes chemical reed and treatment adjustments
  • Replenishes treatment equipment with chemicals
  • Maintains records of chemical usage
  • Performs routine equipment and plant monitoring maintenance
  • Performs basic building and grounds maintenance functions
  • Backwashes filters
  • Off-loads chemical supplies
  • Performs related tasks as required

Typical Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • General knowledge of the principles, practices, equipment and methods used in water treatment and pumping operations
  • General knowledge of computer applications and programs
  • General knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with water plant and related activities and of necessary safety precautions
  • Some knowledge of chemistry as applied to water treatment
  • Ability to adjust water pumps, chemical feed machines and other water plant equipment
  • Ability to check the operation of equipment and to detect defects in operation
  • Ability to take accurate readings, to keep routine records and to make arithmetical computations
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in water treatment plant maintenance work preferred

JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS

  • This is medium work requiring the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 70 pounds of force to move objects
  • Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels
  • Visual acuity is required for depth perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities
  • The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, hazards, and oils

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of or ability to obtain North Carolina Grade C Surface Water Treatment and Class C Water Treatment Plant Operator certifications within one year of employment
  • A NC Class C drivers’ license is required for the entire duration of employment.
