Position Summary

The Department of English and Foreign Language at Livingstone College invites applications for the position of Department Chair. The successful candidate will be a visionary and collaborative leader committed to academic excellence, faculty development, student success, and innovative curricular programming. The Chair will be responsible for managing departmental operations, overseeing curriculum and instruction, mentoring faculty, and fostering a culture of scholarly engagement and inclusive excellence.

Responsibilities include teaching nine (9) credit hours per semester and leading the department in establishing and achieving clearly defined goals. Applicants must have strong and effective interpersonal skills, demonstrated skills as an accomplished educator, and the ability to identify and establish appropriate educational direction. A commitment to differentiated instruction based on learning styles is essential.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and strategic direction for the Department of English and Foreign Language, including curriculum development, assessment, and academic planning
  • Supervise and evaluate departmental faculty and staff
  • Collaborate with the Dean to recruit, hire, and retain highly qualified faculty
  • Foster an inclusive environment that supports faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds
  • Promote faculty scholarship, professional development, and participation in institutional service
  • Manage departmental budgets and oversee scheduling and course offerings
  • Advise and mentor students and support student academic achievement
  • Represent the department on division and college-wide committees
  • Utilize instructional technologies such as Blackboard, MS Teams, and others to enhance learning
  • Promote the mission and goals of the Division of Liberal Arts and Humanities and Livingstone College

Education/ Experience

Qualifications
Candidates should possess the following:

  • Ph.D. in English, Comparative Literature, Linguistics, or a closely related field
  • Minimum of 3 years of full-time college or university teaching experience
  • Demonstrated administrative or leadership experience (e.g., as department chair, program coordinator, or committee chair)
  • A strong record of scholarship, teaching excellence, and commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • Experience with program assessment, curriculum development, and faculty mentoring
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
